Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite Highlights

If you have built trust around Xiaomi and looking for a mid-range phone with stylish outlook, massive display and suitable performance, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is a smartphone worth checking out. However, it has some strong advantages as well as a few drawbacks. Let us evaluate it in this short review.
The first thing you will notice about Mi 8 Lite is its gradient back side. Especially, the aurora blue version will shine and change colors from different angles. The front and back glass with aluminum frame gives this phone a solid build. Previously, the premium mid-ranger Xiaomi Pocophone F1 was criticised for its plastic build. The display here is huge (6.26 inches). Users with smaller hands may have an issue with the grip especially because of the slippery glass back panel. But a silicon back cover is included in the box which will provide a slightly better grip. The screen quality is Full HD+ with 403 PPI. Mi 8 Lite is specially made for users that are fond of a large display with fine quality. But point to be noted, it is made with IPS LCD technology so, you won’t have that super premium experience of a Full HD+ AMOLED screen. Under sunlight, viewing is decent but not first-rated. The notch is smaller than the regular one and you can even turn the notch off if you don’t like it. There is also LED notification light on the front which is very useful and important for many. Design, display and build gets a very good mark from us.
Performance wise, we couldn’t find anything to complain about. In fact, the performance is one of the best in this price range with 14nm Snapdragon 636 chipset. It is also known for power efficiency so, the 3350 mAh battery will also provide satisfactory backup and let you go through the day. Thank Xiaomi for the quick charge 3.0 as well for a much faster-charging possibility. Graphics is also fine and we didn’t see any lag.
Camera is the big tagline of Xiaomi for this model along with its design. However, we weren’t as impressed with the cameras as with the design. There is a 12+5 MP dual camera in the back and a 24 MP camera on the front. Both can capture reasonable quality photos in bright daylight. But it struggles in the low light and there will be a lot of noise at night conditions. The HDR improved the brightness, but we often found over contrast. The AI scene recognition technology also limits the perception of the surrounding from our artistic point of view. If you have used mid-range phones from Nokia or Samsung, you will see that the environment looks more authentic and vivid. Nevertheless, the front camera portrait mode was adequate. It can record 4K videos, but again you won’t have the feeling of premium 4K recordings. There will be a fair amount of noise and the lightings and colors are not well-optimized. There is EIS feature though, which stabilizes the Full HD recordings very well but not that effective in 4K mode.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite comes with USB Type-C and there is no 3.5mm jack. But Type-C to 3.5mm adapter is included in the box, so it is a non-issue. The sound quality is lovely. There is a rear-mounted fast and consistent fingerprint technology. There is no face unlock though. The device is not waterproof as well. Overall, we expected it to be more impressive particularly when it comes to the camera. Still, it is a fine choice for the budget.
